CLEANINGS AND PERIODONTAL THERAPYThe gums and bone in our mouth are the foundation for our teeth. They provide the support for the tremendous forces we exert on them everyday, so it is important that we keep that foundation healthy. A "cleaning" is a minor periodontal procedure performed on patients who have only a minor accumulation of tartar and plaque and have healthy bone around the teeth. For patients who accumulate large amounts of tartar around the teeth and under the gums, who have unhealthy bone around the teeth and because of this have one of the various stages of gingivitis or periodontitis (advanced gum disease), then these patients require periodontal therapy. This treatment is more involved than a routine cleaning and depending on the severity of the gum disease, requires multiple visits to make the gums and the bone around the teeth healthy. | ||||
