FILLINGS AND CROWNS

What is a cavity? Essentially, natural bacteria that is in our mouth, that helps us breakdown the food we eat, settles into a part of the tooth that we can no longer get at with our toothbrush or floss. Cavities can be large or small. Small and medium sized cavities can be restored with a tooth colored filling.

If a cavity becomes too big for a filling, or if an existing filling starts to leak and needs replacement, sometimes a crown is done. A crown is a gold or tooth colored porcelain "cap" that fits around the entire tooth. This seals the tooth to prevent bacteria from causing more decay and it stregthens the tooth, because a large cavity can leave just a shell of a tooth that can't hold up to our chewing forces.
