I read that several actors and actresses have veneers to whiten and straighten their teeth. What exactly are they? Answer: A veneer is a thin shell of porcelain bonded to the front of a tooth. They have a wide range of therapeutic indications not all of which are cosmetic. It is true that they can help whiten, even out the shades, fill in spaces, and even straighten teeth. There are many cases due to medications or too much mineral in drinking water, that teeth develop internal staining which can only be remedied by covering up (see our gallery for an example). Veneers however, are not a reversible treatment. In most cases, some preparation of the tooth or teeth is necessary in order for the veneer to be strong enough, and so that the teeth do not appear to be too bulky. Veneers can last a long time but do not last forever, so for young adults considering veneers, you must be wary of the fact that you might need them replaced a few times in your lifetime. But for many patients, veneers are an excellent treatment, and can dramatically improve your smile. |
